Advantages Of Led Aquarium LightsWhen setting up your aquarium, you may find a bewildering array of lighting options. Should you choose fluorescent lights, metal halide bulbs, and light-emitting diode (LED) aquarium lighting? Do your plants or corals require a specific color of the light spectrum for best growth? There are a number of great advantages to LED aquarium lights. They produce much less heat and use less energy. LEDs such as the Cree LED aquarium lights can be customized to produce the ideal spectrum colors for your specific coral and plants. LED Aquarium Lighting Produces Less Heat You don't want your aquarium to overheat. If the water temperature rises too high, it can make the fish, coral, and plants sick or cause them to die off. Metal halide bulbs create substantial heat. In order to keep the fish tank at the optimal temperature of 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit, you may have to run a chiller unit to prevent overheating. Units like the Cree LED aquarium lighting use LED lights that produce much less heat. Many people find their fish tanks don't require a chiller unit when switching to LEDs. LEDs Are Environmentally Friendly In today's energy-conscious environment, LED aquarium lighting is the prime choice. LED bulbs last substantially longer than metal halide or fluorescent bulbs. Here are the average lifespans of the different light sources: ?Fluorescent lamps: 9,000 hours ?Metal halide bulbs: 8,000 hours ?LED bulbs: 75,000 hours LED aquarium lighting uses far less energy than metal halide bulbs, and they contain no mercury like fluorescent bulbs do. LEDs produce no harmful ultraviolet light. Lamps like the Tesla LED aquarium lights may cost more than other types initially, but the substantially longer lifespan and reduced electricity costs more than make up the difference. Plants and Coral Require Specific Light Colors While photosynthetic coral and plants can grow with many types of lighting, they do best when intensity and certain parts of the light spectrum are enhanced. You may see these marked as either Kelvins (K) or nanometers (nm). Kelvins, also called "color temperature," measure light intensity. Nanometers measure the specific frequency of light in the spectrum and specify color. For example, 620 nm lights produce an orange color while 470 nm lights produce blue. Freshwater plant life does best with an intensity of 5,500-6,500K. This best simulates natural light. Shallow water coral prefer 10,000K, and deep water coral species need 20,000K. Plants and symbiotic coral have the most efficient photosynthesis at a wavelength of about 430 nm, which is in the blue-violet part of the spectrum. Adding blue light helps coral produce more fluorescing pigments, too. Tesla and Cree LED aquarium lights have blue bulbs mixed in with the natural white light bulbs to help enhance coral and plant health.
